Sick from a Cell Phone? Say it isn't so!

Cellphones Are Great for Sharing Photos—and Bacteria; Cleaning May Harm Screens!

When you combine a cellphone's proximity to your ears, nose and mouth with its bacteria-loving warmth, the result can be harmful to your health.

A lab tested eight randomly selected phones from a Chicago office for this article. The phones showed no signs of E. coli or staphylococci bacteria. But all phones showed abnormally high numbers of coliforms, a bacteria indicating fecal contamination.

"The results are pretty bad," said Dr. Donald Hendrickson, president of HML Labs and professor emeritus of medical microbiology at Ball State University. He says the results suggest a lack of hand-washing and proper hygiene.

HML then tested four different cleaning methods, including water, alcohol, Windex Original glass cleaner and Nice 'N Clean electronic cleaning wipes. Alcohol performed best, cleaning nearly 100% of the bacteria. Plain water proved to be the least effective method of the four.

The soda industry has taken a new approach to the war on obesity. Starting early next year, Coca-Cola and PepsiCo will begin posting calorie counts on select vending machines in Chicago and San Antonio.
The revamped vending machines will be rolled out as part of a competition between government workers in the two cities: Municipal employees in San Antonio and Chicago are engaged in a "wellness challenge".
Dubbed "Calories Count" by the American Beverage Association, the machines will not only display the number of calories in a can or bottle of soda but also suggest a lower calorie beverage option to consumers. If successful, the retooled vending machines will be expanded nationwide.
Health experts say consuming sugary beverages like soda increases obesity in adults and children.

Foods that Fast Food Workers Would Never Eat!

Fast Food Options to Avoid:

Fast Food Ice: Ice and soda machines are, apparently, very hard to keep clean. The Reddit thread contains horror stories of mold and other things we won't go into here. If you're concerned about the state of what you're drinking, you probably shouldn't order soda at a fast food restaurant.

Chicken Nuggets: The quality of this fast-food favorite obviously depends on the restaurant in question, but chicken nuggets, and what exactly they're made of, seem to be an item of concern across the board.

Unconventional Pizza Toppings: The bottom line seems to be that topping meats and "'quirky' toppings such as green olives, meatballs, spinach, artichokes, sauerkraut, sun-dried tomatoes, etc." are rarely fresh.

Sweetened Teas: This drink makes the list not for food hygiene concerns, but purely for the amount of sugar that goes into sweetened tea recipes. Fast food workers want you to know that sweetened teas are comparable to any soda and are definitely not a healthy option.

Condiments and Complementary Items: Communal condiments like ketchup bottles and salt and pepper shakers at some restaurants are often re-filled again and again without ever being cleaned. Short story? Stay away.

Anything Sold Just Before Closing Time: Many people might not realize that the food they're buying at the end of the day is probably old and unused. Be especially cautious of large, sold-by-the-slice pizzas that are slowly heated throughout the day.
